At ST1 Group, we are committed to developing future industry leaders through our apprenticeship and mentorship programmes. This National Apprenticeship Week, we’re shining a spotlight on Damon Trench, one of our talented Project Managers, who has been growing his skills in both Project Management and Quantity Surveying while working towards his RICS chartership.
Meet Damon Trench – Project Manager
Damon has been with ST1 Group for over two years, working across a diverse range of projects while advancing his knowledge through our mentorship programme. His role sees him taking on both project management and quantity surveying responsibilities, ensuring that projects run smoothly from inception to completion.
Why Choose an Apprenticeship with ST1 Group?
When asked why he chose to train with ST1 Group, Damon highlighted the broad spectrum of expertise within the company:
“ST1 offers a vast range of knowledge covering all areas of construction. Working with the various teams—Dispute Resolution Services (DRS), Project Management Resolutions (PMR), ST1 Consulting, and Construct1—you can target and enhance any skills required. They also provide full support throughout the scheme and have an onsite RICS counsellor to help with the programme.”
This level of support ensures that apprentices and trainees gain hands-on experience while receiving expert guidance to help them succeed.
Developing Key Skills
One of the most valuable lessons Damon has learned during his time at ST1 Group is effective communication:
“The most valuable skill is the ability to communicate with a range of people, from subcontractors to high-end clients. Understanding how to communicate effectively and efficiently is crucial to achieving commercial and programme goals and delivering a successful project.”
This skill is essential in the construction industry, where clear communication can make the difference between a smooth-running project and one filled with challenges.
Exciting Projects and Career Highlights
Damon has played a key role in a variety of projects, particularly for Mitie and their BBC account, where he has delivered over 25 projects ranging from £50K to £3M in value. His work has included:
- Radio 2 Studio Construction – Bringing to life a cutting-edge broadcasting space.
- Media Café and Bar Full Fit-Out – Creating a modern and functional environment for BBC staff.
- W12 Fire Alarm System Upgrade – Enhancing safety and compliance in a major facility.
- Bespoke Heritage Lighting Fit-Out – Preserving the character of historical BBC sites.
One of his proudest moments was witnessing the completion of the Radio 2 studios and hearing them broadcast for the first time. Another highlight was seeing the Director General of the BBC unveil the newly renovated BBC Club and Media Café.
Advice for Future Apprentices
For those considering an apprenticeship or traineeship, Damon has some words of encouragement:
“This is a great option as it combines theory with real-world application on live projects.”
At ST1 Group, we believe that hands-on experience is the best way to learn, and we are proud to support our apprentices as they develop their careers.
