National Apprenticeship Week: Meet Daniel, Assistant Quantity Surveyor at ST1 Group

At ST1 Group, we’re proud to support apprentices on their journey to becoming skilled professionals in the construction industry. This National Apprenticeship Week, we’re introducing you to Daniel Wensley, an Assistant Quantity Surveyor at ST1 Group, who made the bold career switch from teaching mathematics to the world of quantity surveying.

From the Classroom to Construction

Daniel’s journey into the industry is anything but typical. After working as a Mathematics Teacher, he sought a new challenge—one that would allow him to apply his analytical skills while gaining hands-on experience in a growing industry.

“I wanted to take on more responsibility and build a career as a Quantity Surveyor,” Daniel explains. “Having no prior experience in construction, I jumped at the opportunity to join ST1. Here, I work closely with experienced professionals and gain exposure to a wide variety of projects.”

Valuable Skills Learned Along the Way

While Daniel has gained practical knowledge—such as creating payment notices and Bills of Quantities (BOQs) for tenders—he believes the most valuable skill he has developed is effective communication. “Clear and precise communication is key in this industry, whether it’s with clients, subcontractors, or the wider project team.”

Diverse Project Experience

Since joining ST1, Daniel has worked on a range of projects, including:

Refurbishment of student tower blocks at Warwick University
New residential developments in London
Hotel refurbishment in Paddington
Expansion project at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital

Each project has given him new challenges and opportunities to apply his learning in real-world settings.

Proudest Achievement So Far

Daniel’s biggest achievement so far? Saving a contractor £70,000 after spotting an error in a subcontractor’s quote. “Not only did I help prevent the subcontractor from losing a significant amount of money, but as a thank-you, they also offered a discounted quote—benefiting the project overall.” Moments like these showcase the real impact that apprentices can have in the workplace.

Daniel’s Advice to Future Apprentices

When asked what advice he’d give to someone considering an apprenticeship, Daniel is clear: “Do it.”

“You gain valuable experience on the job, which allows you to link theory to practice. There’s no better way to learn, in my opinion.”

At ST1 Group, we couldn’t agree more. Apprenticeships provide an incredible foundation for a successful career, and we’re proud to support our apprentices every step of the way. Find out more about our commitment to personal development on our Training and Mentoring pages.
